1. VLC media player (Video/Audio player):
VLC is a most powerful yet light program. It has an ability to play just about anything you throw at it. It won't kill any of your resources and will fluently play HD videos too. Forget the pain of downloading code, just install and enjoy just about any video.
2. Adium (IM):
Want to chat with Facebook friends and Google Talk people the same time? Mac has tons of IM clients but this is worth it. Just like the VLC player it is light weight and you can use it to chat with just about any Network. Aim, MSN, FB chat, GChat, everything could be done under the same window.
3. Google Chrome (Browser):
Just like we thank Internet Explorer that lets us download other browsers in Windows we thank Safari in Mac. But Safari isn't that crap as IE is, but still it can't compete with our all time Favorite Google Chrome. Cold boots and loads Web pages in seconds. Tons of Applications in the Chrome Web store and the best looking browser in the world.
4. Avast (Antivirus):
Mac isn't safe to the Viruses and we have already seen that. In the wake of viruses and in order to keep the data safe we need to install Antivirus softwares. Avast is a virus killer that won't be as heavy like Norton but will be as efficient to kill every virus. But remember protection is always better than cure.
5. Onyx (Crap Cleaner):
Just like the CCleaner in the Windows, Onyx does the same insane stuff to your Mac. Cleaning unnecessary stuff will boost your computer's performance and will make your Mac look more fast. It is pretty much on the spot.
6. OpenOffice (Document-Presentations-Spreadsheets):
Open Office is the Microsoft's office like suite. Helps you to make presentations, write documents and also manage expenses or some other similar stuff on spreadsheets. It is a MS office + iWork's alternative. Plus it is free to download.
7. The Unarchiver (Archive):
The Unarchiver is a solid software, which has a unique ability to uncompress just about any file you throw at it. It claims that " The only unarchiving program you will ever need".
8. Google Drive (Cloud Backup):
Dropbox feels like past now. With 5 GB of free space and branded by Google, Google Drive makes it our favorite Dropbox alternative. The best thing is you can see and share everything from browser too.
9. Quicksilver (Productivity):
It is a productivity tool that helps you to search your Mac content quickly and easily. Hit Command and Space-bar and a launcher will open. Just type in what you want and it will fire up the thing you are looking for even before you finish typing.
10. AppFresh (Update tool):
It isn't an easy task to keep your applications updated. It is a big pain to visit a website and then install particular updates. But when you have tons of apps it become impractical. Appfresh saves your day. It keeps a track of the applications that have been installed on your system and looks for updates, if available. It reminds and notifies you for the updates of the application.
