Nokia Lumia 820: First Impressions

Lumia_820_ATT

For the past couple of months, at whatever topic Nokia's name came to mind, Lumia's and Windows phone 8 flagship phone 920 was always praised. ATT exclusive Lumia 920 is going to rock market with a solid $99 price tag. Nokia tried the same strategy with Lumia 900, last year. Though they failed to gain market share, but it wasn't because of Nokia is making poor hardware but Microsoft did not allowed current Windows 7.5 (aka Mango) devices to upgrade to Windows 8.

Nokia 920 is a high end phone--that can challenge iPhone 5 at every end--but Nokia also unveiled 820 a lower end version of the 920 model.

Lumia 820 has got 1 GB of RAM, 1.5 GHz snapdragon S4 processor, Low 800X480 resolution screen, and mere 8 GB of Internal memory. Nothing impressive, right? So why does it matter?

Because it can top low end Smartphone market. In the low end market small things matter like removable back panel, memory expansion slot, an impressive 8 MP camera, and some Nokia exclusive apps that don't suck. Also Wireless charging is a welcome addition.

Impressive at every end

The new Nokia Lumia 820 is one of those devices that can compel one to buy one, even at a $49 price tag. Big brother, i.e. Nokia Lumia 920 is a huge and bulky phone. 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide plus a weight of 185 Grams is too much for an average Smartphone user, and using it might be like doing some weight lifting.

Lumia 820 has a state-of-the-art design, just like Lumia 920. The rounded corners make it feel comfortable in your hands and it comes in vibrant colors.

Also, you can get a total of 72 GB of memory on this phone. How? Through memory expansion slot, we can add 64 GB of Micro SD card with 8 GB of Internal Storage. 72 GB is way higher than storage of any flagship model right now in the market.

If you are not very camera pro, then the 8 MP camera that has been packed within Lumia 820 is enough for your routine shots. There is no instagram officially available in WP store which is a sham. Though there are many applications that just copy’s the basic framework--but truth be told they are not up to the mark as an official Instagram App--which can be downloaded from Windows store.

The Bad

Screen resolution is quite low as compared to other devices. Nokia does include its Clear black technology for screen that make it lot less reflective than any other display (And Blacks are solid black; you can't even distinguish when your screen is ending--edges and screen looks an intergral part.)
But this screen is a letdown when watching high-def clips from Web.

Another bad thing about this phone comes from the network part. It is an AT&T exclusive device. That's like restricting potential buyers locked across other network. In 2012, this kind of strategy is not gonna work. Sorry Nokia.

Bottom line

For a $50 phone, you can’t actually complain about the lack of High-end features you get in the Nexus or iPhone or Galaxy S3. It is way better than any offerings right now by HTC at this price point.

Even if you want to get Nokia Lumia 920, give this phone a try, I am sure you can change your decision to get this phone.

Which is the Best Phone Camera: iPhone 5 VS Nokia Lumia 920

Apple with iPhone 4S proved you can replace your point and shoot camera with a Smartphone's mere 8Mp camera . The iPhone 4S's 8MP camera was stunning and Apple kept the count of megapixels the same and improved its optics, so that was iPhone 5's camera. 4S had a standard in the market, while comparing any Smartphones image quality, iPhone's quality was looked side by side. Later but sure, Nokia came up with a technology called Pureview. It was great though and the first phone to feature it was Nokia Pureview 808 with a jaw dropping 41 Mega Pixel camera. But still failed in the market because of Operating system. It ran on Nokia's own Symbian belle operating system, no surprises here, bit bad operating system. Now Nokia is entering the market again with a Pureview device which feature Windows Phone 8 by Microsoft. Can Lumia's 920 8.7 MP beat iPhone 5's 8 MP camera?

iPhone 5

Good
  • Image Quality is quite consistent.
  • Good low-light performance.
  • It reproduces color well.
  • Macro shots look clearer than ever.
Bad
  • Color is too rich
  • In low light, yellow turns orangish and like colors.
  • In the dark, photos looks grainy.
  • The videos look a lot like iPhone 4S's one.

Lumia 920

Good
  • Awesome low light performance.
  • Reproduce color well.
  • Optical image stabilization works well.

Bad
  • Not consistent.
  • In Direct sunlight, there's a lot of glare.
  • Poor contrast.

In my opinion, if you are looking to buy a phone that just works, that is consistent with every shot, that is from Macro mode to Low light mode, iPhone 5 is a better deal. Lumia is for those who want some extra precision in their shots. Both are very capable image producing machines and give a head to head competition, so the final decision is up to you, which OS works for you better.

EE Launches UK's First 4G LTE Networks

UK's Carrier Everything Everywhere (EE) is rolling out 4th generation of mobile networks in UK. At first they will be bringing LTE networks to 11 Cities. As reported earlier, they are first to roll out LTE networks in UK. EE says it will be adding about 2,000 square miles or 2 Million People per month, eventually covering nearly 98 percent by the end of 2014.

EE's CEO Olaf Swantee said
"Today is a landmark day for our company, the UK mobile industry and, most importantly, the country’s businesses and consumers."
“But this is just the start as our 4G network will continue to grow stronger and wider by the day. We're investing £1.5 billion in our network to be the first company to offer mobile 4G in the UK, alongside the biggest 3G network. Combined with our Fibre Broadband and revolutionary service model we have a pioneering and unique offer to customers across the UK – superfast speeds in the home, superfast speeds on the move and expert service on nearly every high street in Britain.”

EE's Plans starts at 500MB for £36 a month and scale up to 8GB for £56. In addition to it you can download or stream one movie per week from the company's new Film Service and the best part is the streamed/downloaded data won't cut from your plan. EE claims about 8 to 12 MB per second speed, which they claim to be 5 times faster than their existing 3G network.

Text Expanders for Smartphones

textexpansion
Text Expanders are very handy as we don't have to type the same word again and again. It saves time as well as also helps in keeping pain of the hands away. But in Smartphone's its not that straight forward. Yep, you can save the same amount of time in Mobiles using Apps on your iOS, Blackberries, windows phone and some Android keyboards.
