New iPad WiFi + 4G: Apple, the 3G is already the 4G

iPad

Apple is still struggling with the competition authority ACCC Australian who asked him to change the name WiFi + 4G attributed to its new iPad with a cellular modem since it is not compatible with the frequency bands of Australian 4G.

But the Australian press reports, Apple is trying a gamble by saying that the 3G network operator Telstra can somehow be encompassed by the name "4G". How is this possible?

Easy. Just do not take as a basis of comparison that the download speeds. For if the theoretical speeds at the base stations are distinct (100 Mbps LTE, 42 Mbps for the DC-HSPA), the difference is generally much smaller at the average rate recorded on the user's terminal, which is found in one and the other case with a flow rate of several Mbps.

Moreover, it is improperly called LTE 4G, then it actually belongs to the group of IMT-2000 3G technologies (even if it is at the upper limit of the definition and termed 3.9 G). Its evolution, LTE-Advanced, in turn belongs to the group that is supposed to truly define the 4G, or IMT-Advanced.

This mishmash continues to operate in the U.S., for example allowing AT & T to include a "4G" in identifying the type of network on the iPhone 4S while it distributes this statement only covers the compatible HSPA + (3G so) ... like every other iPhone 4S worldwide.

It is this mix that might be tempted to export Apple Australia to defend his case and say that ultimately the "4G" from his new iPad might as well refer to HSPA + (or DC-HSPA, modulation to achieve flow rates of 42 Mbps).

The problem is that the differences between HSPA + or DC-HSPA and LTE does not stop at the only issue rates. It's not for nothing that the operators must fully redeploy an LTE network on the foundations of their 3G network, while an HSPA terminal has no chance to access an LTE network. Changes will also play at the infrastructure level, moving closer to LTE all-IP networks and offering much better latency.

It remains to be seen how far the equation = 4G 3G is defensible. Outside the U.S., few operators have dared to take that step, although some are not far. However, the confusion it causes long term is perhaps not the expected gain in the short term. But after all, Apple is not a mobile operator.
