Android holds nearly 60% of smartphone market

Android

For the first quarter of 2012, the volume delivered smartphones reached 152.3 million units, according to the latest IDC. Android is the race leader with solid volumes which increased from 36.7 million to 89.9 million units for a market share of 59%.

Unsurprisingly, it's Samsung who vrp is the best operating system for mobile with Google Android sales 45.4% over the period to his credit. IOS is second with 23% market share and 35.1 million units shipped (88.7%).

Symbian is still number 3 but its volumes fell by 60.6% with 10.4 million units against 26.4 a year earlier. IDC sees the result of the transition to Windows Phone from Nokia while stressing that there is still one more consumer demand Symbian. The slump continues for RIM BlackBerry OS, which fell below the threshold of 10% market share (6.4%) with 9.7 million units.

The decline is expected to continue at least until the arrival of BlackBerry OS 10 at year end which acts as the last chance for the Canadian firm. Windows Phone is in sixth place with volumes still far from highs: 3.3 million units against 2.6 million in the first quarter of 2011. (EP)
